Location: Atlanta, GA
Profession: Tax Reporting/Accounting

Job Description:

Firm Service: Tax Services
Reference Code: E10ATLTSRCAA070-NFT
Type of Position: Full-time
Job Description

There is a tax implication for almost every transaction a company undertakes, from trading to acquisition to offshoring. Even the most sophisticated global companies often struggle with balancing compliance details and long-term tax strategy. The tax specialists of Deloitte Tax LLP (Deloitte Tax) have the perspective to help companies understand national, state and local and international tax structures and align the tax function with business objectives.

Deloitte Tax professionals of the National Federal Tax Services (NFTS) practice work with local office Deloitte Tax professionals to assist clients with fundamental tax planning and analysis.  These Federal tax professionals work to understand company-specific business and tax issues and work with the company to optimize its tax position to identify and mitigate risk areas.

NFTS Tax Senior Consultants' primary responsibilities include consulting and overseeing federal tax projects which include complex tax research for clients in diverse industries, research and analysis of a wide range of tax issues encountered on our engagements, and spending a large amount of project time at client locations. In addition, our tax seniors assume tax-planning responsibilities for our federal clients and supervise assignments by the professional accountants serving as Consultants.

Tax Senior Consultants in the NFTS practice will work in one of the following service offerings:

Production Activity Solutions (PAS)

ProvenSolutions - E&P, Stock Basis, 382, and Loss Disallowance (e300)
ProvenSolutions - Inventory Strategies, Improvements & Solutions (ISIS)
ProvenSolutions - Travel, Meals & Entertainment Tax Services (M&E)
ProvenSolutions - Niche Solutions

All NFTS Tax Senior Consultants are able to participate in a formal rotation program which will allow them to spend at least twelve to eighteen months in each NFTS Service Offering, thus enhancing their federal tax technical development and knowledge.

Research and Development Tax Incentives (R&D)

R&D incentives provide significant tax benefits at the federal, state and local level.  These benefits are offered for research conducted in the United States, as well as research performed in over 30 other countries that offer research incentives.

The R&D credit is one of the most significant of the remaining U.S. domestic tax credits.  The credit is a permanent benefit providing tax savings, as well as financial statement benefits.  Additionally, the credit is available for all open tax years - generally the last three or four years plus the current year.  Delaying an evaluation of the company's research credit position jeopardizes your ability to claim a credit because the information needed to sustain a research credit is more difficult to secure as time passes.

Companies often overlook significant pockets of R&D performed by their company because they fail to consider the broad definition of qualifying research in section 41, which includes, for example, process engineering improvements and direct support of research.  Moreover, many companies fail to consider the full scope of qualifying expenses, such as stock options and severance pay.  Consequently, companies can miss out on qualified R&D expenditures in manufacturing, engineering, quality assurance, marketing, purchasing, information technology and other areas.

Our Services:

The Research & Development Tax Services Group is a national team of over 140 specialists dedicated to providing comprehensive research and development tax incentive services.  We bring value to companies of all sizes and industries by focusing on the following items:

·       Federal Research Credits
·       Tax Accounting for Research Expenses
·       Global Incentives/Impact
·       State Research Credits
·       Other State Incentives
·       Section 59(e)
·       Assistance with FAS 109 issues

We work with Deloitte's Multi-State, International and Transfer Pricing groups to maximize our clients' benefits and minimize exposure.  Additionally, our R&D group has specialty teams that focus on Global, State and IT/Software opportunities.  We suggest processes to address not only the technical issues, but also methodologies for fact gathering, documenting and identifying the qualifying expenses.  These processes have been proven to minimize the burden on your tax department and provide the information often requested by IRS examiners.

Our specialists help clients take full advantage of available R&D credits and incentives through:
·       Comprehensive R&D Incentive Studies - We review prior years as well as the current year to uncover additional eligible R&D costs, activities and incentives.
·       Assistance with IRS Examinations - We provide support in maximizing incentives and supporting claims.
·       Methodology Reviews - We review existing efforts to capture R&D benefits and develop a methodology to use on a prospective basis.
·       Government Relations - We develop effective strategies and represent our clients' interests before targeted decision-makers.
·       R&D Proprietary Software Tools - We have developed proprietary database management tools (DBX, DBXi, GDX R&D module) to facilitate the identification and collection of qualified research expenditures.
·       Base Period Reviews - We review our clients' historical base amount computations along with the base amounts of any acquired or merged entities to evaluate the application of any planning opportunities to minimize the impact of the base amount on the credit computation.
