Qualifications: A basic understanding of news production and desire to work in a news production environment. A four-year degree from an accredited university or demonstrated experience in the field is essential. Technical candidates should have hands-on technical experience. Editorial and video editing candidates should have writing or production experience in print or television news production. Most applicants gain experience through campus newspapers, radio stations, or television studios as well as through professional internships. We look for people with a demonstrated news background; solid editorial skills and an understanding of the news of the day are a must for applicants. An interest in learning all aspects of the production process is essential.
Duties: The Video Journalist (VJ) position offered at the Atlanta headquarters of the Cable News Network (CNNUS, CNN International, and CNN Headline News), provides hands-on experience for entry-level candidates pursuing the main disciplines of news production: technical control room; video editing; editorial (including producing, writing, and news gathering). VJ duties include, but are not limited to, floor directing, teleprompting and script distribution for live broadcasts, as well as production support for Media Operations. VJs fill a variety of jobs in many departments at CNN, CNNI, Headline News, and CNN Media Operations. VJs are expected to advance to other positions within the organization sometime within their first 24 months of employment, or they will be subject to termination of employment, absent exigent circumstances. Towards that end, strong performers among the VJ ranks may have the opportunity to train with media coordinators, video editors, associate producers, assignment editors, writers, producers, audio operators, electronic graphics operators, and master control operators. However, this is not guaranteed and is subject to individual performance and job time constraints.
